Jonathan Scott Hughes Music Scholarship Fund

On April 27, 2008, the lives of myself and my family were forever changed at the tragic and untimely death of beloved son and brother Jonathan Scott Hughes.  Rather than dwell upon the fact that he is gone, or the surreal events surrounding that time, I choose to remember his time here for the great person he was.  Scott, as he was known, was an intelligent, generous, perceptive, kind, humorous, creative person and a very talented musician.  So many of my memories of him are guitar in hand, though at the time of his passing, he was playing the drums for a rock band.

Scott overcame many challenges, notably Attention Deficit Disorder.  He practiced his guitar scales frequently and worked hard to become as skilled a musician as he was.

Challenges are part of life; we all have them.  But I personally have a great deal of respect for those who overcome obstacles like Scott did, sometimes having to put more effort into a task to attain a result than a person without the disorder would have to put forth.  Since it takes more to achieve the goal, I believe it makes the attainment of that goal that much more significant.

This Scholarship Fund is established to benefit a person (ideally more than one if we are successful) who wants to become a musician, is disadvantaged by one or more conditions or factors which make it a challenge to pursue the goal, and is intent on and dedicated to becoming a musician notwithstanding.

I believe there is a central energy which flows throughout the earth and connects all people… something beyond karma, which makes it possible to leave an energy-charged legacy of goodwill and kindness in a very real sense.  Scott is not gone; he lives on in the hearts and minds of the countless people touched by him throughout his amazing life.  Your donation honors Scott and every other student who is struggling over behavioral disorder obstacles to be the person--and the musician--they know they can be.

You can hear two of Scott's songs by clicking on the buttons under his photos.

Disclosures

As of November 2009, this charitable fund is not (yet) a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.  It is therefore not a tax deduction; confer with your CPA as to whether your individual donation may be written off for tax purposes.   The donation fund is, however, non-profit and 100% of the proceeds will go to the beneficiary chosen by Jennifer Hughes based on specific criteria after sufficient funds are raised to give a full or partial scholarship to one person.  The sole exception to this is administrative expenses (e.g., the cost of filing for a 501(c)3.)  Any legal work for established the 501(c)3 will be done pro bono by Jennifer Hughes.

Donations will be segregated and will not be commingled with any of my personal or other business bank accounts at any time for any reason.  Donors may request an accounting of funds donated at any time.  If donors so desire, they will be notified of the beneficiary/recipient of the scholarship award.
