You can imagine how tough (I mean, difficult) it was to keep this project under wraps (I mean, secret) for eight years while we were working on it!  My concern, of course, was when people learned about it, they would have clever ideas they might feel should be included.

But I wanted to use my own ideas!  Please keep in mind the number of drawings in Literally Speaking and Literally Speaking Too represent, I believe, the best of over 800 ideas (and counting!) I had for this project.  But, we had to cut it off at some point (I mean, decide what to use from what we already had) so that you, the reader, could have this book sometime in this century!   I even struck some of my ideas (I mean, decided not to use them) when I saw them come out on t-shirts and greeting cards.  I know my ideas weren’t stolen; this type of humor can be obvious!  Given the proper frame of mind and stimuli, someone else could have thought these up.  However, I got to them first (at least in my own mind, where I am a legend), and I wanted to keep the project completely free of external influence.  The exception is “Take a Wok,” which was the idea of our dad, Reggie Hughes (also known as Reg Hughes or Red Shoes).  Our thanks to him for that suggestion; we’re sure he meant that in the nicest possible way!

I am fortunate enough to have a brother (the great Daniel L. Hughes) with unparalleled artistic ability (no bias, really!) who illustrated my ideas (I can only hope no one ever sees the sketches I “drew” to convey what I pictured!).

Anyway, the upshot of all this banter is I know once you have a look at this, you may have some seriously great ideas (or funnily fantastic ideas), but I must respectfully request that you do not submit them to me.  They cannot be acknowledged, and they will not be used.  Thank you for your dissent-free inclusive cooperation.

I have read the Author’s Note and understand that suggestions will not be acknowledged, accepted or compensated.  I agree not to submit any suggestions.  By checking this box I PROMISE I have read, understood and agree to the above:
